Why it is
called Wayne's World?
The owner,
Wayne Silby, has been the owner of this marvelous property since
1984. He lives in Washington DC and bought this as a refuge site
from summer and work on the east coast. And it is here he hosted
several memorable parties, one of which may have given birth to
the name "wayne's world"..... we don't know... - island mythology
is rich.
History
of this Site
This is a gathering
place. It was once a site for the Coast Salish First Nations. After
settlers arrived, the initial structure was built in the 1950s.
Later it was sold to Cold Mountain Institute and we have heard various
stories of Zen monks at the house and cabin during that time.
As Hollyhock
was birthing in the early eighties, the founders encouraged Wayne
to purchase this piece to ensure that Hollyhock would have friendly
neighbours. Since Wayne arrived on the scene, because of his generosity
and openness, many, many people have stayed here, either through
Hollyhock or "winter gypsies" - people do not own local property
and have to "Cortes Shuffle", usually getting evicted by the returning
"summer only folks".
You would find
it's amazing how many people will say "Wayne's World?! Yeah, I stayed
there once!" and proceed to tell a fascinating story.
Current
Vision
It was about
four years ago that Wayne decided to renovate the old house, which
was rotting and a bit too shack like. The building project took
on a life of it's own and can be said to be the co-creation of Wayne,
his daughter Georgina , and David Shipway the local builder with
help from many fabulous people, and the invisible mystery forces.
Because we
have always felt generously held by this immediate environment,
whether we were seeking rejuvenation or creative innovation, contemplation
or communion, we want this experience to continue and be shared
and wish for this place to serve people well, groups of people.
Special
View
The comppound
was built on a landslide. Thereby it is surrounded by the sea from
three sides, which creating an especially wide and close seaside
view. About half of the house's wall surface is windows, which allows
people to enjoy the wonderful view from almost anywhere in the house.
For example, while you are lying in bed in the master bedroom, you
can see the world "under your feet"...
The
House
Our intention
is multi-functionality and community. We designed the house to encourage
people into the communal living experience. We want the house to
host intimacy on many levels. Of course people can retreat to the
bedrooms or the tatami meditation room but we think the house and
the compound in general, is for co-habitat, council, celebration,
conference, ceremony, and conspiracy - group processes.
The house itself
has a mudular structure: it is an integral house, yet can be easily
partititioned into several indepedent sections, each with its own
access and amenities.
By the side
of the house, we have a cabin. Higher on a deck perking on the slope
of the hill, we also have a small tent-like dome overlooking the
ocean where you can spend the breezy summer nights.
